The Dragon Boat Festival: A Living Heritage Of Chinese Civilization

May 30, 2025

Tomorrow marks the traditional Chinese festival Dragon Boat Festival, which falls on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month each year.

Recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, the Dragon Boat Festival (Duanwu Festival) carries the unique cultural DNA of Chinese civilization.

Originating from ancient rituals honoring dragon totems during the midsummer season, the festival evolved during the Warring States period as it merged with the poignant legend of patriotic poet Qu Yuan. It thus embodies a dual spiritual essence-reverence for nature and celebration of human virtue.

Crafted with Ingenuity: From the Fragrance of Zongzi Leaves to the Sentiment in Sachets

  • The angular shape of zongzi is not only a taste memory but also reflects the ancient Chinese cosmology of "round heaven and square earth."
  • Hand-stitched by intangible cultural heritage artisans, the five-colored sachets are filled with herbs like atractylodes and mugwort, presenting a traditional Eastern approach to aromatherapy.

Dragon Boat Racing: Unity in Action, Prayers for Blessings

  • Dragon boat racing requires dozens of people paddling in unison, embodying the spirit of collective strength-"many hands make light work." Before launching, traditional dragon boats undergo rituals like "worshiping the dragon deity" and "dotting the eyes" to awaken the dragon spirit and seek safety.
  • In South China, there's a custom known as "Dragon Boat Water," where Duanwu Festival rain is believed to dispel illness and ward off evil. From its ancient roots in warding off disease, to its timeless pursuit of poetic ideals, the Dragon Boat Festival offers the world a multifaceted prism of Chinese culture-reflecting humanity's shared longing for health, dignity, and transcendent values.
